Portrait of a notable, Mughal India, 18th century
Drawing on paper enhanced with gold and colored pigments depicting a bearded notable standing, facing left, with his hands crossed in front. He is wearing a turban and a jama tied with a belt into which is slipped a katar, a talwar worn on the shoulder. Mounted on an album page with a double salmon and green border and a beige margin. The first border inscribed in nasta'liq in black ink "Shabih Khan 'Alim bin Najabit Khan", the margin inscribed in devanagari in gold letters. On the reverse side, an empty space probably intended for a calligraphy in the middle of the same margin with an inscription in nagari in the upper left corner.
Page size : 40,6 x 26,1 cm ; drawing size : 15,1 x 8,8 cm
Stains, a few folds and accidents, some gilding, traces of adhesive.

The two lines of devanagari inscribed in gold in the lower margin are characteristic of the pages of the royal collection of Mewar and perhaps suggest the provenance for this one.
