This prayer refers to the third cholera pandemic (1852-60) which spread throughout the world and killed some 1.5 million people. During this particular pandemic several prominent rabbis including Rabbi Akiva Eiger and Rav Yisrael Salanter took radical halachic steps to demonstrate the importance of preserving life by insisting on social distancing, even if it meant interfering with community prayer services.
