ROSTAND (Edmond).
Chanteclerc. Play in four acts, in verse.
Paris : Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1910. - In-8, 235 x 162: (4 ff.), 244 pp. and (1 f), illustrated cover. Paperback, under leather cover decorated with an embossed decoration signed by René Lalique.

First edition of this famous play by Edmond Rostand, performed for the first time on the stage of the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin on February 7th 1910. The title role was played by Lucien Guitry. The false title is illustrated with a colored headband after a composition of the author.

Copy on japon impérial, specially printed for Louis Labat (1867-1947).

This provenance is important because, in addition to being a poet, novelist and theater critic, Labat was Edmond Rostand's secretary from 1902 and one of his close friends. The false title is enriched with this beautiful autograph letter signed by the author:

"to Louis Labat // souvenir of the poultry... // and the proofs! // his friend // Edmond Rostand // Hotel Majestic // April 1910."

Copy with its soft leather cover adorned with the title and an embossed rooster profile signed by René Lalique. It has been enriched with a part of the invitation card to the gala presentation of "Chanteclerc" at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin during the 1927-1928 season, as well as two tickets for the dress rehearsal of the play in the same theater. Opposite the title has been added, stuck with scotch tape, a handwritten leaflet reporting a letter from Rostand to Maurice Griveau as well as a letter from Ernest Lavisse to Rostand.

Spine and second board faded and rubbed, wear to headpieces and flaps of boards. Two tape repairs inside, at the beginning of the copy, small stains on the edge of the first four leaves of text.
Provenance: Louis Labat, with a letter from the author.
