RAFFET (Auguste). Retreat from Constantine. Six subjects by Raffet. - Capture of Constantine. Twelve Topics, by Raffet. Paris : Gihaut frères, [1837-1838]. - 2 albums in one volume in-folio, red half-maroquin with corners, gilt filets, smooth spine decorated, gilt head, covers preserved (Pagnant). Set of the two albums that Auguste Raffet devoted to the conquest of Algeria. The first one, published in 1837, includes a title and six plates, while the second one, published in 1838, includes a title and 12 plates, all lithographed in black. It is good to notice that the two titles answer each other. Indeed, on the first one, a wounded soldier after the failure of Clauzel, holding out his arm, with this caption: "We will take it again in spring". The illustration of the title of the second album represents a soldier in faction, with this legend: "They kept their word." After these two albums Raffet designed other lithographs and subjects on Algeria, separately or in publications like the famous "Journal de l'Expédition des Portes-de-Fer". Copy including the lithographs in first edition on chine with large glued margins, distinguished from the later editions by the presence of the abbreviation "Lith." at the bottom left before the name Gihaut. A very nice copy bound by Pagnant, complete with the covers on which the titles are reproduced. All the plates as well as the covers have been mounted on tabs. Some traces of rubbing to the corners. Scattered foxing, only rarely reaching the lithographs.
