FORAIN (Jean-Louis). The Fifre. Paris, February 23, 1889 - June 1, 1889. - 15 fascicles in-folio, half marbled parchment in bradel, smooth spine bearing the name of the author and the title in calligraphy letters in ink, cover preserved (binding of the beginning of the XXth century). Complete collection of this satirical newspaper created and illustrated by the painter and press illustrator Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931), comprising 15 issues published between February 23 and June 1, 1889. The artist presented his newspaper on page 2 of the first issue as follows: "To tell the story of everyday life, to show the ridiculousness of certain pains, the sadness of many joys, and to note rudely sometimes by which hypocritical way Vice tends to manifest itself in us: this is my project. A whimsical researcher, I will go everywhere, trying to render in a clear and immediate way, as sincerely as possible, the impressions and emotions felt. Always joyful, often ironic, these notes will target contemporary failings, without attacking the contemporaries themselves; my opinion being that to be interesting and curious it is largely sufficient for the artist to study his time. Have collaborated in this journal, apart from Jean-Louis Forain, Armand Silvestre, Emile André, Jean Richepin, Paul Masson, Paul Hervieu, Jacques Le Lorrain, etc. A good copy, complete with the rare grey printed front cover. Soiling to the cover.
