[DIDEROT (Denis)]. Les Bijoux indiscrets. In Monomotapa, [1748 ?]. - 2 volumes in one in-12, marbled basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (period binding). Adams, "Bibliographie des œuvres de Denis Diderot", II, BI2, pages 28-29. - Tchémerzine, II, 922. Second edition described by Adams and Tchémerzine, most probably published in 1748, the year of the original edition. Printed in Paris or Amsterdam, it is illustrated with 2 title vignettes and 6 copper-engraved plates, unsigned. These are the same plates as the original but re-engraved and somewhat modified. The frontispiece has no caption but simply bears the inscription "Frontispiece des Bijoux", the others bear the mention "Les Bijoux". The title vignettes are different, the first depicts a sultan and another man looking at a half-naked reclining woman; the second depicts a lover pulling back the curtain of a canopied bed. This last vignette is similar to the one in the original edition but the subject is reversed. There are two differences with the description given by Adams, the plate on page 18 in volume 1 shows the genie on the left and the man on the right, as in the original and the first plate of the second volume is placed facing page 265, which is correct, and not facing page 274. A good copy in contemporary binding. Binding very skilfully restored, the decoration of the third box has been redone. Missing the notice to the binder at the end of the first volume, as is often the case, Tchémerzine does not describe it.
