Gilt bronze clock decorated with figures after Louis Simon Boizot, surmounted by an eagle with spread wings resting on a base decorated with sphinxes; (restorations, notably on the dial). The dial signed by Jean Baptiste Baillon in Paris. Louis XVI period. H : 54 cm, W : 65 cm, D : 12 cm Probably the widow of Jean-Baptiste IV Baillon (died around 1773) who continued the clockmaking activity after her husband's death. The model of this clock was designed by the bronze worker François Rémond, who used the figures of the Reading and Writing made by Louis-Simon Boizot and also published in porcelain at Sèvres. A very precise drawing, probably from Rémond's commercial catalog, was sold in Paris on February 20, 1981, lot 26. The merchant-merchant Daguerre delivered two clocks of this type for the royal castle of Saint-Cloud in 1788, one for the salon des jeux, the other for the king's inner cabinet. This model was very successful until the early years of the 19th century.
