Marek Oberländer was part of the group of artists who organized the exhibition "Przeciw wojnie, przeciw faszyzmowi" (against war, against fascism) in 1955 in the Arsenal in Warsaw, which highlighted the work of young artists opposed to the prevailing doctrine of socialist realism. In 1963, the painter left his country to settle in France. Until then he had concentrated on the human figure, but a heart attack in 1964 brought about a change in Oberländer's work: his paintings are now filled with blurred forms, cut by reflections of light, and all allusions to the human figure disappear.
