First edition of this important publication published by the writer and journalist Léon Moussinac (1890-1964) presenting a sample of the most beautiful interior decorations of the Art Deco period.

According to the historian Rose-Marie Stolberg: "Involved in an ethical and political reflection on modernity and its democratic expansion (which leads him into the ranks of the young French Communist Party in 1924), Leon Moussinac develops a reflection on the arts born with the industry and / or linked to it, including the cinema and the applied arts (also called decorative arts). This point is essential in his eyes, because the arts of the industrial era play a considerable role in the preparation of the public to the advent of the revival. Indeed, the industry which is intended for the mass production, transforms the society and modifies, by using science, the environment and the conditions of life. For him, the new social needs, the new materials, the adaptation to the technical means of reproduction... must direct the applied arts towards the abandonment of the ornament. The necessary conciliation with the industry, the adaptation to the utility (the function dictates the form) and the adequacy with matter (the respect of the material) become primordial laws of the decorative art, following in that the way taken by the architecture since the end of the XIXè century. "

In total, the publication includes 213 captioned plates with photos of interiors and furniture, drawings, as well as plans of the greatest decorators and interior architects of the time, such as Francis Jourdain (1876-1958), Pierre Chareau (1883-1950), René Herbst (1891-1982), Jacques-Emile Rulhmann (1879-1933) or Louis Süe (1875-1968) and André Mare (1885-1932

).

Most of the plates are in black but some have been stenciled.

Staining and wear to the folders. Freckles on several plates. Red pencil drawing on the back of plate 30 of the second volume.
