GRAY (Eileen) - BADOVICI (Jean).
E. 1027. House by the Sea.
Paris : Albert Morancé, [1929]. - Album in-4, 271 x 225: (2 ff.), pp. 17-28, pp. (17)-27, 34 plates. In sheets, in publisher's laced cardboard folder.

First edition of this emblematic pre-war book on contemporary architecture.

It is a description of the conceptual house built in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin by the Irish decorator and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) and the French architect Jean Badovici (1893-1956). It is known as "E. 1027", with the "E" standing for Eileen's first name, the "10" indicating the tenth letter of the alphabet, i.e., the "J" for "Jean", the "2" referring to Badovici's letter B and the "7" to Gray's G.

The pre-original edition appeared in the magazine L'Architecture Vivante, forming the number 26 of winter 1929. This album is the original edition published in the wake, presented as an "Extract of Living Architecture". It consists of explanatory texts with black plans, followed by thirty-four plates, mostly black photographs of the exterior and interior of the building, but also plans. Four of these plates have been stencilled.

Copy of which was missing the first six leaves of text, which have been replaced by the corresponding leaves from issue 26 of L'Architecture Vivante; they are thus paginated 17 to 28 instead of 5 to 16.

Good copy despite some soiling and traces of rubbing on the edges of the folder

.

Scattered foxing on the leaves from the magazine.
