DERÈME (Tristan).
Molière.
Autograph manuscripts signed, 21 pages in-12 oblong mounted, 1928. Bound in half blue morocco and half calfskin, wavy separation made with four rows of silver staples, smooth spine, gilt head, framed in dark blue morocco and calfskin inside, adorned with a bold fillet and a thin silver fillet, lining and endpapers in orange and blue tones, spine folder and flap bands in dark blue morocco, slipcase (Canape and Corriez - Louise Denise Germain. 1930)

Fabienne Le Bars, Louise-Denise Germain (1870-1936). Bindings, BNF, 2017.

Signed autograph manuscript of the à-propos performed at the Comédie-Française on January 15, 1928 for the celebration of Molière's birthday

.

It consists of the draft in fourteen pages and a second draft of seven pages.

This text, after having been spoken at the Comédie-Française by the actor André Brunot, appeared in the Figaro of January 16, 1928 and then the same year in the work La Querelle des comédiens et des poëtes by Tristan Derème and Béatrix Dussane, published by Le Divan

.

These two states of the manuscript were offered by the author to Louis Barthou, accompanied by a letter which was mounted at the top, dated February 24, 1924, one page in-4: "You will laugh at me that I take so much care to gather these poor papers!

Derème's wish was granted since Louis Barthou ordered a real case for these manuscripts

.

He asked the artist and decorator Louise-Denise Germain (1870-1936) to design a binding, the execution of which was entrusted to Canape. The result, of great sobriety, is one of the most charming bindings made by this duo.

The endpaper was specially painted for the binding. Louise Denise Germain adopted watercolor or gouache painted endpapers from 1922-1923. These years coincide with the marriage of her daughter Nadine to the Czech-born painter Joseph Sima, to whom some of these endpapers are attributed. As they are not signed, their attribution is never certain.

A very nice copy, perfectly preserved.
Provenance: Louis Barthou, with ex-libris (cat. III, 1936, n° 1690).
