ROZIER.
Des habitudes secrètes ou des maladies produites par l'onanisme chez les femmes.
Paris : Audin, 1830. - In-8, 215 x 132 : frontispiece, (2 ff.), 321 pp, (1 f.), 3 plates, printed cover. Paperback.

Third edition, corrected, of this treatise on the evils of female masturbation, composed by Doctor Rozier and first published in 1825. It would be in reality the second edition of the book since all the copies met with the date of 1825 carry without exception the mention of "second edition", mention which would be in our opinion fictitious.

The author gives a series of letters addressed to a young lady, exposing different cases taken from medical literature and from the author's experience, which only repeat those already exposed by Tissot. He presents in a dramatic way the illnesses and pathologies that girls indulging in masturbation incur, summarized in the second letter: "People given over to the folly of solitude... present more or less quickly the symptoms of dorsal consumption; they do not have fever at first; however, although they keep their appetite, their body becomes thin and consumed; it seems to them that ants come down from their head along the spine. Walking, even simple strolls, especially on difficult roads, makes them breathless, weakens them, causes them to sweat, head heaviness and ear noise; diseases of the brain and nerves occur, stupidity and imbecility..." (pp. 4-5), and the list goes on.

The interest or originality of the book lies above all in the four illustrations representing the state in which women who indulge in masturbation can find themselves, which were not in the previous edition. The engraving placed in the frontispiece is only the allegorical representation of onanism and its consequences.

Rare paperback copy, as issued, largely uncut.
Spotting and soiling to the cover. Scattered foxing.
