Rare first edition, printed in a small number and not put in the market, published posthumously for a circle of intimates by two of the author's friends: Guillaume-Stanislas Trébutien and Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly.

It is a collection of letters addressed by Eugénie de Guérin to her brother Maurice, preceded by an important preface by Barbey d'Aurevilly. In a second part is the diary that Eugénie wrote after the death of her brother, which occurred in 1839, followed by letters to the Breton poet Hippolyte Lamorvonnais.

Copy offered by the publishers to the viscount of Freissinet, bearing this dedication in the hand of Barbey d'Aurevilly on the false title:

Offert par J. B. d'Aurevilly & G. Trebutien // au vicomte de Freissinet //
Pour le de-velliniser.

The autograph letter signed by Barbey d'Aurevilly, which accompanied the copy when it was offered to the viscount, has been preserved and glued after the title. One page in-8, it is dated from Caen, at M. Trébutien's, on April 13, 1856: "A man absent from Paris - probably even more absent from your memory - has not forgotten that you, viscount, were making the rain and especially the sun in the salons where he no longer goes. For this, he sends you the diamond book that is here. Let your sun shine in it and the diamonds of all the women you see will be splashed and they will bleed with jealousy! [...] But I would have sent it to you, the connoisseur, the Athenian, not from Athens the Great, but from Athens the Small! I would have sent it to you, this book printed in 50 copies that we give away and that we don't sell (Fi donc !)... "

Good copy in strictly period binding.

Rubbing from use on the spine, corners dulled.
Provenance : Viscount Izarn de Freissinet, with autograph dispatch from the publishers and bookplate.
