[GRASSET (Eugène).
History of the four Aymon sons, Very Noble and Very Valiant Knights. Illustrated with color compositions by Eugène Grasset. Engraving and Printing by Charles Gillot. Introduction and Notes by Charles Marcilly.
Paris : H. Launette, 1883. - In-4, 277 x 225 : (3 ff.), 8 pp., (1 f.), pp. 9-224, (8 ff.). Charcoal grey morocco, framed with gilt fillets, gilt circles and mosaic patterns of red, ochre, brown, burgundy and havana morocco on the boards, spine decorated with gilt and mosaic patterns, gilt Greek fillets and roulette inside, mosaic flower in red morocco at the corners, gilt head, untrimmed (period binding).

The most beautiful illustrated edition of this text inspired by a medieval legend, decorated on each page with color compositions by Eugène GRASSET.

It is the first book printed with the new process of photogravure and chromography invented by Charles Gillot. The illustration breaks with the norm of the time, overflowing or even superimposing itself on the text. This work was belatedly recognized as a precursor and herald of Art Nouveau.

One of the 200 copies of the deluxe edition, this one being one of the 100 numbered on China paper.

A very fine copy in a mosaic binding of the period, surprisingly unsigned.

The binder has not kept the covers.
