[ROMAN LAW]. Corpus juris civilis. Editio nova. Amsterdam : Jean, Blaeu, Louis and Daniel Elzevier ; Leiden : Franciscus Hackius, 1664-1663. - 2 volumes in-8, 192 x 114 : (12 ff.), 1037 pp. (1 f. blank) ; 820 pp. (2 ff. last blank). Red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco lining decorated with a large gilt border, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Willems, 1323. " Sought-after edition because of its beautiful typographical execution", of the corpus of civil law which constitutes the greatest compilation of ancient Roman law. It was published by the leading Dutch publishers of the time and printed on the press of Jean Blaeu in Amsterdam. It is a textual reproduction, without the notes, of the folio edition published in 1663. It is illustrated with a very beautiful engraved intaglio title-frontispiece, unsigned. The title of the second volume is dated 1663. very nice copy in a late 17th century double binding and entirely ruled in red . It comes from the library of Eugène Paillet (1829-1901), adviser to the Court of Appeal of Paris, president of the Society of Friends of Books and mentor of the collector Henri Beraldi. He conceived two collections; the first one was sold en bloc to Damascène Morgand and the second, more important, was dispersed in two parts after his death in 1902. This copy appears in the first part of the 1902 sale, under number 70. The notice indicates that the binding is from the workshop of Luc-Antoine Boyet. This is unlikely as none of the irons on this binding belong to Boyet's gilder. It is nevertheless from one of the great workshops of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Some rubbing without gravity to the hinges, headpieces and corners. Provenance: Eugène Paillet, with ex-libris (cat. I, 1902, n° 70).
