APULÉE. Luc. Apulee De l'Ane dore, XI livres. Translated into French by I. Louueau d'Orléans, & put by Chapters & Summaries, with a table at the end. Plus y a sus les 4. 5. 6. livres traitans de l'amour de Cupido & de Psiches, XXXII huictains, mis en leur lieu, traduitz sus d'autres qui ont été trouvé taillez en cuivre en langue Italique. Lyon : Jean Temporal (printed by N. Perrineau), 1558. - In-16, 116 x 71 : (8 ff.), 409 pp. 10 ff. Dark green morocco, double cold fillet and gilt arms in the center of the boards, smooth spine decorated with cold motifs, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges (workshop of Derome le jeune, 1776). Very rare new edition of the French translation given by Jean Louveau, of Orleans, of the Metamorphoses of the Golden Donkey of Apuleius. It first appeared in 1553 with the same publisher and was reprinted many times until the beginning of the 17th century. The illustration consists of thirty-one woodcuts in the text, some of which are repeated, attributed to Bernard Salomon but more likely by different artists. This edition is not cited by Baudrier or Brunet, who only mention the Temporal editions of 1553 and 1559. Beautiful copy with the arms of Pierre-Adolphe du Cambout, Marquis de Coislin (1805- 1873). Former page of King Louis XVIII, he "had a tastefully formed library" (Olivier). It also comes from the collection of the Marquis de Biencourt, with his bookplate. Some wear rubbing to the covers and corners. Scattered foxing, mainly concentrated on the title. Provenances : Marquis de Coislin, with bookplate. - Marquis de Biencourt, with bookplate.
