At the Salon of 1875, Antonin Mercié won the medal of honor for his monumental bronze group Gloria Victis. The work was commissioned by the City of Paris following the success of the plaster cast made in Rome, presented at the Salon the previous year and purchased by the State. Executed by the founder Thiébaut Frères, the monument was first placed in Montholon Square before joining the collections of the Petit Palais museum in Paris. A bronze sketch dating from 1872 is kept at the Musée d'Orsay. Given the success of the model, the sculptor established a publishing contract with the foundry Barbedienne in 1877.
