Charles MOUCHEZ. 3 L.A.S., Oberwald, Grindelwald, Aforschach (Switzerland) 1894, to his mother Carlota Mouchez; plus 7 L.A.S. or cards from his sister Fernande to the same; in all 23 pages in-8 or in-4, 5 engraved headers, illustrated envelope. Relation of a trip to Switzerland illustrated with several engraved headers. In August 1894, Charles Mouchez made a two weeks trip to Switzerland with his sister Fernande. They were joined by their brother-in-law, Henri Lachelier. This correspondence allows us to retrace their itinerary. After passing through Pontarlier, they arrived in Bern (Switzerland) on August 11, 1894. They then went to the south of the Valais where, on the 14th, they climbed the Saint-Théodule pass, located in the Pennine Alps, between the Matterhorn and the Breithorn. The next day, they crossed the Valais to go successively to Zermatt, Brig and Oberwald. Then, on the 16th, they crossed the Grimsel Pass in the Bernese Alps, between the cantons of Valais and Bern, where they observed the Rhone glacier. On the 17th, they met friends in Meiringen (canton of Bern) and then went to Grindelwald, where they descended the small Scheidegg (18th) and the big Scheidegg (19th). On August 20 and 21, they stayed in Morschach (canton of Schwyz), south-east of Lucerne, where they canoed on Lake Lucerne. They left on the evening of August 22, to return to Paris the next day and return to Wissous where Carlota Mouchez lived. This correspondence is illustrated with several engraved headers: Hotel & Pension Oberland and Hotel & Pension du Glacier in Grindelwald; Buffet du Brunig-Culm; Hotel Rütliblick, on Lake Lucerne in Morschach; the latter subject also adorns the enclosed envelope. Excerpt: "I haven't yet told you about the famous passage of the Gorner glacier and the ascent to the St. Theodule: 900 meters of ascent, 1700 m of descent including 5 hours in the ice [...We had a guide who was cutting degrees in the ice and who was holding me by one hand while I was leaning on my stick with the other, then he put us on the rope, and was walking in front, so that we only had to walk in the trace of his steps [...] The view is splendid, these ice fields are unforgettably grandiose. I was dying to go up to the Breithorn but we didn't have time [...] Yesterday we went to see the source of the Rhone in an ice cave so beautiful and so blue that one would think he was surrounded by clouds [...] Afterwards we passed the Col du Rhône, where we had to go to the bottom of the mountain.Afterwards we passed the Grimsel pass, the exit on the Hasli valley is superb, we slept at the Handek from where I wrote you yesterday a small map and we came here, to Meiringen, by stagecoach through the Aare valley which is ideal from one end to the other. During the day we went to see the Aare Gorge and the Reichenbach Falls"... (Fernande, Meiringen August 17, 1894).
