George SAND (1804-1876). L.A., [Nohant 28 (?) October 1843, to Charlotte Marliani]; 2 pages in-8 in her cipher (2 small holes at the top without affecting the text). Sand instructs her close friend to take care of Chopin. [The letter was entrusted by Sand to her son Maurice, who was returning to Paris with Chopin, who had been staying in Nohnat since May 21]. "Dear good friend, here is my little Chopin. I entrust him to you. Take care of him in spite of himself. He behaves badly when I am not there, and he has a good but stupid servant. I am not worried about his dinners, because he will be invited from all sides, and at that hour, moreover, there is no harm in his being forced to shake off a little. But in the morning, in the haste of his lessons, I fear he will forget to swallow a cup of chocolate or broth, which I give him in spite of himself when I am there. [...] Nothing is easier for his Polish than to make him a little stew and a chop. But he won't tell him and maybe he'll even forbid it. So you have to lecture Chopin and threaten him with the gendarme Enrico. Chopin is well now, he only needs to eat and sleep like everyone else. I am forced to stay another two weeks to do some gardening work, a total renewal of the fruit trees and also the sanitation of the house that a certain poorly constructed, not odorless pit is infecting on one side. [...] Besides, I have some money matters to settle, I will get rid of all that, in order to join you quickly, I count on you however to warn me in case Chopin would be sick a little bit seriously, because I would leave everything to go to take care of him" .... Correspondence, t. VI, n° 2722.
