[Ernest RENAN (1823-1892)]. Joseph-Hippolyte GUIBERT (1802-1886) prelate, archbishop of Tours then of Paris. L.S., Tours November 12, 1857, to Jean-Baptiste Vaillant, acting Minister of Public Instruction; 2 pages and a quarter in-fol. Very interesting "personal" letter against Ernest Renan. Having learned that Renan was proposed for the chair of Hebrew language at the Collège de France, he reread his writings and denounced therein "doctrines subversive of all religion, and all the more dangerous, that they are presented under rather brilliant forms and with a feigned moderation". This nomination "would be a scandal in the eyes of all religious men", and a dangerous platform: "his teaching will be a more or less dissimulated attack against the revelation"...
