Hervé BAZIN (1911-1996). 17 L.A.S. and 2 L.S., 1964-1992 and n.d., to Maurice Dalinval; 30 pages of various sizes, including 3 on the back of postcards representing his castle of Grand Courtoiseau, some letterheads of the Académie Goncourt, envelopes.

Interesting political and literary correspondence to the journalist friend. The letters are written from Paris, Èze, Bry-sur-Marne, La Roche-Colas (Maine-et-Loire) and from the Grand Courtoiseau in Triguères (Loiret)...
Bazin is delighted with the success of his latest novel [Le Matrimoine]: "we are heading towards 200,000 copies," says my publisher .... October 1975, a long letter on the attacks suffered by the Académie Goncourt. "I am beginning to find the attitude of the leftists disturbing! That they paint the walls in front of Grasset, Gallimard, Seuil, etc. with inscriptions, insulting the academies, is not very serious. But a molotov cocktail at Charensol's house, that becomes more serious. The paint-gun attack on Tournier and François Mallet-Joris is another revealing incident. Last night, new molotov cocktails at Mathieu Galey's and at Françoise Mallet-Joris's seem to indicate - as do the contents of the leaflets - that they are not stopping there. A curious point of honor - or a certain fear of ridicule - is surely what prevents the victims from reacting. Françoise nevertheless filed a complaint against X. The origin of the whole movement (anti price, it is said, but in fact anti culture), it is by his own admission, Jean-Edern Hallier who (relayed by Thieuloy, it is believed) deplores today not being able to "retain his activists". The publishing houses, the academies could, if it continues, be systematically attacked. The Goncourt Prize, on November 17, is unlikely to take place without incident. ....
Long letters are devoted to the political news, in particular around François Mitterrand. March 76: "I always thought that François Mitterrand would be Giscard's prime minister and that only then would we know what should happen to our society. Because on this experience - inescapable - will depend the continuation: six months or six centuries of socialism, according to the reactions of the French and the ability of the politicians to provoke them in one direction or the other" .... 1978: several long letters analyzed the political situation before and after the legislative elections. 1981: he refused to support a candidate and explained himself in a long text. "Basically, we social democrats (30% of the French) do not have a candidate. We dream of the "great Sweden" promised by General de Gaulle: knowing how to combine a socialism of redistribution with the refusal of a collectivism of production. A Giscard-Rocard tandem, however, remains a sight to behold. .... A week before the election, he predicted Mitterrand's victory: "The Communists rallied en masse; the RPR paid lip service. This is the price of the "programmed absorption" of the RPR by the UDF: Chirac and Co did not forgive the president [...]. All the RPR farmers in this area will vote for Mitterrand in the second round. They say so. In my opinion, Mitterrand is done for. .... 1988: "the great beneficiary could be a Le Pen, arbiter of the situation. Nice perspective! "....
