After the end of the imperial regime, the young German republic was confronted with an ideological struggle within the left-wing parties, which were divided between reformers and revolutionaries. In January 1919, German Chancellor Friedrich Ebert (Social Democratic Party) dismissed the Berlin police prefect Emil Eichhorn (Independent Social Democratic Party), who had refused to suppress the Christmas 1918 sailors' strike. An insurrectional movement followed, which was reductively called "Spartakist" after the revolutionary party founded by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. The latter was assassinated at the end of January and the revolts were violently crushed. The Berlin photographer and reporter Willy Römer documented the entire period and the adoption of the first constitution in Weimar, which only brought relative calm to these dissensions.
