François Jean GARNERAY (Paris 1755 - 1837)
Album of views of Calais, Corbeil, Gisors, Lille, Paris, Rouen, Vincennes...

"Garneray (François Jean), born in Paris on December 28, 1755, was a pupil of David, and painted genre, flowers and portraits.
He had the same predilection for old monuments as Mr. Dussommerard for old furniture, and undertook numerous trips to draw churches, castles and ancient sculptures, in order to protect them as much as possible from the vandalism of demolition.
It is to this taste that we owe the attached collection of drawings, some of which were engraved in a work entitled Antiquités nationales and in the works of Dulaure; they are all remarkable for the finish of their execution and their scrupulous accuracy.
This collection was bought at Garnenay's sale by one of his friends, Mr. Maigret, an enlightened art enthusiast, who, to honor the memory of the old artist, has brought them together and arranged them in this album.
François Jean Garnenay died in Paris on June 11, 1837.
Garnenay (Auguste) watercolor painter, died in Paris on March 16, 1824.
Garneray (Louis) Marine painter,
Garneray (Hippolyte) genre and watercolor painter.
J.A 1838."
