Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901
)La Troupe de Mademoiselle Églantine. Poster. 1896. Lithograph. [800 x 620]. Delteil 361; Wittrock P21. Printed in colors. A very fine proof on thin ivory vellum, formerly interfaced, with a 10 mm margin at the head, the latter finely oxidized at the edge. Several very fine horizontal broken creases across the subject.

"In 1896, Jane Avril went to perform at the Palace Theatre in London with Miss Eglantine's troupe. She commissioned Toulouse-Lautrec to design the poster for the show in a letter, preserved in the Albi Museum, in which she indicated the names and order of the dancers. Lautrec worked from a photograph but did not follow his friend's instructions. He placed the dancers from left to right, Jane Avril slightly detached from the other three, then Cleopatra, Eglantine and Gazelle. We find the art of synthesis of the artist who transforms the reality of a photographic cliché into a very graphic, flat and linear composition." (www.musee-toulouse-lautrec.com).
