May Belfort (ca. 1872-1929) was an Irish singer and actress, who performed at the Café des Décadents and the Petit Casino. She commissioned this famous poster from Lautrec, which shows her in a red dress, holding her black cat. She became one of the artist's favorite models. She played on a childish register and wore on stage a bonnet and a high-waisted dress that made her very popular. She based her brief career on the saucy song "I have a little cat, and I like it a lot.
