Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885
)The Good Samaritan. 1861. Pen-and-ink lithograph. 440 x 560 [483 x 645]. Van Gelder 100 (this proof cited); Becker 2nd state (of 2); Préaud 29, 1st state A. Fine proof on chine appliqué, from the 1st printing (1861), the printer's name Lemercier scratched out to make room for an important dedication in pen and sepia ink: "testimony of good remembrance / for your good hospitality / Biarritz October 5, 1866 / Rodolphe Bresdin," before the white stain at the bottom in the foliage (known as the "bird"), before the white thistle under the lance, but with the black stain on the leg of the 2nd monkey at the bottom right, carefully washed out, the chine reassembled with care. Several skillfully and formerly restored tears in the right margin and in the lower margin to the right of the dedication. Good margins (a little gray).

"...very soon, perhaps as early as the second printing, which dates from September 10, 1867 [...] various accidents occur. The first one, noticed by David Becker, is a black spot that develops on the left leg of the little monkey [...] Before the white bird, before the white thistle." (M. Préaud, Rodolphe Bresdin, 1822-1885, Robinson engraver, Paris, BnF, 2000, p. 75).
Our print shows that the accident on the monkey's leg occurred before the second print run of 1867, since the dedication on our sheet dates from 1866, one year earlier. We can therefore assume that this accident occurred during the first print run.
