*DUNOYER DE SEGONZAC (André) - DORGELÈS (Roland).
Les Croix de bois.
Paris : La Banderole, [1921]. - In-8, 254 x 183: frontispiece, (4 ff. 2 first blanks), 278 pp. (5 ff. 3 last blanks), 9 plates, printed cover. Ivory parchment, boards decorated with a painted and lacquered decoration composed of a central cross in black at the foot of which appears a bouquet of blue, white and red flowers held by a large blue sheet surrounding green and gilt laurel leaves surrounding the cross, smooth spine decorated with 4 chiseled and painted flowers, beige moiré silk lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (André Mare)
First illustrated edition, decorated with 50 compositions by André DUNOYER DE SEGONZAC (1884-1974), including 10 original drypoints out of text and 40 drawings reproduced in the text.
During the First World War, Segonzac was mobilized in the infantry before being assigned to the group of camouflage artists, which allowed him to travel the lines. The many drawings he made on the spot have a recognized artistic and documentary value, and are a unique testimony to this conflict. He used them to illustrate 3 of the main novels about the Great War by Roland Dorgelès: Les Croix de bois (1921), La Boule de Gui (1922) and Le Cabaret de la belle femme (1924).
Edition at 600 copies. This one is one of the 20 on japon impérial, containing a suite of drypoints on Hollande.
COPY IN A DECORATED BINDING BY ANDRÉ MARE (1885-1932), ONE OF THE FATHERS OF ART DECO.
Painter and decorator, he was, with Louis Süe, the founder of the Compagnie des arts français. He generally did not sign his bindings but they are perfectly recognizable; they are always made of parchment or vellum with an original composition painted by the artist on one or both boards. The decorations of André Mare are often very colorful and generally represent floral compositions.
Copy very well preserved despite some small paint chips without gravity. The slipcase is a later addition, not belonging to the copy.
