[REVIEWS] - LE PETIT (Alfred).
Le Sans-Culotte. Levallois-Perret : Alfred Le Petit, 8 vendémiaire year 87 [28 September 1878]-8 floréal year 87 [17 April 1879].
[Followed by] GILL (André). The Little Moon.
[Paris, 1878-1879]. - 30 and 52 issues in a large format in-8, 265 x 185. Half blue morocco, spine ribbed, head speckled, untrimmed (early 20th century binding).
Very rare complete collection of these two satirical magazines from the end of the 1870's.
La Petite Lune, founded by André Gill in 1878, was a republican and anticlerical magazine
.
It appeared only 52 issues, each one composed of 4 pages, the first one being illustrated with a caricature in colors of Gill. The success that this publication knew at the beginning, convinced the painter and caricaturist Alfred Le Petit to create in his turn his own newspaper, Le Sans-Culotte, on the model of his colleague.
Le Sans-Culotte, which is found here bound at the top, contains 30 issues. "Composed of four pages, it clearly claims the heritage of the French Revolution, with, in addition, a dating inspired by the revolutionary calendar. It is a question of responding to a very particular political situation. The republicans accumulate electoral successes, with as a touchstone the presidency of the Republic in January 1879, but the reactionary forces remain very dynamic.
Thus, by the pencil and the text, Alfred Le Petit does not cease targeting the monarchists, the bonapartists, the clericalism. He militated for the total amnesty of the communards, and was interested in the fate of the "workers". He was then in the radical-socialist movement which denounced both the opponents of the Republic and the lukewarmness and treachery of the opportunists" (La Presse satirique française, n° 18). Each issue includes a caricature on the first page, sometimes in double page inside (n° 15 and 16).
Copies perfectly preserved, bound together in the early 20th century.
Scratch on the fourth box, knocks on one edge of the first plate.
