*JUVÉNAL - PERSE.
Satires of Juvenal and Perse, translated into French verse, with notes ; By F. Duboys-Lamolignère.
Paris : Ch. Pougens, Colas, An IX (1801). - In-8, 196 x 123 : (2 ff.), XXIV, 197, x, 39 pp. (1 blank f.). Red morocco, gilt roulette on the boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt PB monogram on the tail, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges (period binding).
First edition, dedicated to Bonaparte first consul, of the translation given by Dubois de Lamolignière, former adviser to the superior council of Saint-Domingue, of the Satires of Juvenal and Perse. The work also has an interesting preface and notes for each satire.
EXEMPLAIRE OF JOSÉPHINE, IMPERATRICE OF THE FRENCH (1763-1814), with the monogram PB on the tail of the spine, coming from the Malmaison.
This monogram PB appeared around 1798. Its meaning was much talked about, as reported by Anne Lamort in the catalog of the Gérard Souham sale in 2008: "A recent analysis proposed a new reading: the association B and P would have been a coded political message playing with the words Buona Parte, the Good Party (Cf. Livres précieux du Musée de la Malmaison, pp. 63-66). Although intellectually pleasing, this analysis seems indefensible, if one sticks to the strict presentation of the figure: the P placed before the B naturally refers to the names of Josephine before and after her marriage to Pagerie Bonaparte... According to Mouravit, in Napoleon bibliophile, this monogram would have been inspired by a batch of volumes offered by Pauline to her brother at the time of his departure for Egypt. These volumes were stamped on the spine with Pauline Bonaparte's initials and would have formed the core of the Malmaison library. (Anne Lamort, in: Collection Gérard Souham, sale of December 7, 2008, n° 21).
Copy on vellum paper, very well preserved despite discreet and skilful restorations to the corners and a small lack on the upper edge of the first plate.
Provenance : A. Roux, in Montbéliard, with ex-libris.
