PRAGMATIC SANCTION (LA) in francoys with Guillermus paraldi de la pluralite des benefices. Paris : Michel Le Noir, November 26, 1513. - 2 parts in one volume in-4, 190 x 133 : lxx, xxxiii ff, (1 f.) [sig. A-H4/8 I-K4 L8 M6 AA-BB4 CC8 DD-FF4 GG6]. Tan calf, spine with ornamented bands, spotted edges (17th century binding). Bechtel, S52. Second or third edition of the French translation. "The Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges, taken by Charles VII (1438), proclaimed the superiority of councils over the pope. It also allowed the king and the great feudatories to intervene by recommendation in the election of abbots and bishops. This first manifestation of Gallicanism was replaced by the Concordat of Bologna in 1516 ". (Bechtel). The first French edition appeared in 1508. Brunet cites an edition given by Pigouchet in 1510, but as it cannot be found Bechtel doubts its existence. As in the first, this edition by Michel Le Noir consists of two parts, namely La Pragmatique sanction accompanied by the important commentaries of Côme Guynier, which first appeared in 1476, and, in separate folios, the French translation of the text De la pluralité des bénefices by the Dominican preacher Guillaume Perrault (1200-1271), "which treats of concubinarians, simony, etc." (Bechtel S-51). The edition, printed in Gothic letters, is decorated on the title with a large grotesque L depicting a face in profile and a stork, also used by Antoine Vérard, and on the verso with a three-quarter page woodcut depicting a pensive cleric in his library. There is also the mark of Michel Le Noir on the verso of the last leaf. On the title and the last leaf are two old handwritten bookplates: "Je suis et apartiens a venerable et discret Messire Guillaume Bontin (ou Boutin ?) presbtre tesmoing monseigneur Et. Mannet (?)" and "Je suys a Pierre Redin bon garson". Heads torn off, hinges split, corners dulled, traces of wetness on the boards. Freckles and spotting inside, worm work on the endpapers and the lining of the second plate. Tear repaired on CC1 leaf, with damage to text. Lower margin of leaves CC1, CC2, CC7 and CC8 cut.
