POISSON (Jean-Baptiste Marie). Cries of Paris Drawn after Nature. Paris : chez l'auteur, [1769-1775]. - Large in-8, 229 x 156 : title, 72 plates. Granite tan calf, triple gilt fillet and gilt arms in the center of the boards, smooth spine decorated, red edges (period binding). Cohen 812. - Very beautiful suite dedicated to Jérôme-Frédéric Bignon (1747-1782), the king's librarian, including a title and 72 plates, engraved with etching after the compositions of the draftsman and editor Jean-Baptiste Marie Poisson . The set was published in 12 books of 6 engravings between 1769 and 1775. It is very sought after because it gives a rich iconography of the small trades of Paris in the second half of the 18th century: chestnut seller, knife and scissor sharpener, muslin, almanac and bird dealers, etc. DEDICATION COPY, WITH THE ARMS OF JÉRÔME-FRÉDÉRIC BIGNON. These arms are not reproduced by Olivier Hermal and Roton (pl. 872). A copy whose binding has been restored. According to a note on an added leaf, it was originally incomplete with plates 39 and 67. These two plates have since been added, certainly at the time of the restoration, engraving 39 being awkwardly colored, cut at the height of the bowl and pasted on fine laid paper. Plates 14 and 15, with shorter margins, also seem to come from another copy.
