MONTESQUIEU (Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de la Brède et de).
Persian letters. Third edition.
Amsterdam : Jacques Desbordes, 1730 - 2 volumes in-12, 131 x 75 : 312 pp ; 347 pp. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt date on a piece of black morocco at the foot of the spine of the first volume, gilt border inside, gilt edges (period binding).

Third original edition reproducing page for page and line for line the second of 1721
.
It includes 140 letters.
A precious copy in red morocco of the period, perfectly fresh, most certainly coming from the library of Chrétien-François de Lamoignon (1735-1789), president of the Parliament of Paris and later keeper of the seals.
The binding does indeed include the gilt date at the bottom of the spine of the first volume, on a black morocco piece, which is one of the characteristics of the bindings made for this eminent person. Moreover, the irons used here are found on other known books from this library (cf. Librairie Amélie Sourget, cat. 2011, a copy of Mably, Entretiens de Phocion, in-12, 1763, which has the same binding); however, we find no stamp or bookplate.
These bindings are usually attributed to the workshop of one of the Anguerrands, a dynasty of bookbinders who worked throughout the 18th century as the King's ordinary binders. Pierre Anguerrand, received master on April 25, 1726, succeeded Augustin Duseuil. He had two sons, Étienne and Pierre-Étienne, who respectively received their master's degrees on December 4, 1747 and August 14, 1771.in the
1791 sale catalog of the library of Chrétien-François de Lamoignon, a copy of this edition is listed under number 3586 but the very brief notice only indicates one volume
.

Small worm hole at the bottom of the spine of the first volume, otherwise a perfectly preserved copy.
