FENOUILLOT DE FALBAIRE (Charles-Georges). L'Honnête criminel, ou l'amour filial, drama in five acts and in verse. Amsterdam, Paris : Merlin, 1768. - In-8, 197 x 124 : xiv, 90 pp. 5 plates. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet, gilt fleuron at the corners and gilt arms in the center of the boards, ex-dono in gilt capital letters at the top of the first board, spine with ornate nerves, gilt border inside, gilt edges (period binding). Second revised, corrected and enlarged edition of the story of the hero of the play, published one year after the original. It can be considered as a true second original edition because the epistle to Jean-Charles-Philibert Trudaine de Montigny (1723-1777), intendant general of finances, has been recomposed, as well as the preface and the text of the play. One only has to compare the first two lines of the first scene; in the 1767 edition one could read: "The rising of the Sun, in this brilliant distance, // Never seemed so beautiful to me as this morning", which became in the 1768 edition: "The sea appears calm, & the sky without clouds // Promises to the sailors a day free of storms...". The title itself changed from L'Honnête criminel to L'Honnête criminel ou l'amour filial. The edition is illustrated with 5 beautiful plates engraved by De Launay, Simonet, Le Vasseur and Binet after drawings by Gravelot. It is the same figures as in the 1767 edition. EXEMPLAIRE ON LARGE PAPER, IN MAROQUIN WITH THE ARMS OF LOUIS-FRANÇOIS-ARMAND DE VIGNEROT DU PLESSIS, DUC DE RICHELIEU ET DE FRONSAC (1696-1788), marshal of France, member of the French Academy . The copy was later given to the Viscount of Ermenonville, with an ex-dono in gilt letters on the first plate. The owner of this title was Stanislas comte de Girardin (1762-1827), politician, general and then count of the Empire but also musician and draughtsman. He had Jean-Jacques Rousseau as his tutor. A copy quoted by Olivier, Hermal and Roton (IV, pl. 407), very well preserved despite some black spots on the boards, light foxing and rare traces of light wetness.
