BEAUHARNAIS (Fanny de). Mixture of fugitive poems, and prose without consequence. By Madame la Comtesse de***. - Volsidor and Zulmenir, tale For laughs; Moral, if one wants, & Philosophical in case of need. Amsterdam, Paris : Delalain, 1776. - 2 volumes in-8, 196 x 122 : frontispiece, vj pp., (1 f.), 156 pp., (1 f.), 3 plates ; frontispiece, 280 pp. 1 plate. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet and gilt numeral in the center of the boards, spine decorated with nerves, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges (period binding). Cohen 124. partly original collective edition, the tale Volsidor et Zulménie, occupying the whole second volume with a proper title, appearing here for the first time . The illustration consists of 2 frontispieces engraved by Née after Clément-Pierre Marillier (1740-1808), and 4 plates engraved by de Ghendt, Ponce, Le beau and Godefroy after the same artist. A PRECIOUS COPY ON LARGE PAPER, IN CONTEMPORARY MOROCCO. It comes from the libraries of Richard Lion and Alfred Piat. It bears on the boards the figure AF surmounted by a crown of foliage. In the catalog of the Piat library (1898, n° 716), it has been hypothesized that this was the figure of the author whose full name was Marie Anne Françoise de Beauharnais. We did not find anything that could confirm, or deny, this hypothesis. The copy was enriched, after the Piat sale, with an unfinished proof of the first frontispiece and of the plate of the second volume, both cut at the height of the bowl and glued by the edges on laid paper. The proof of the plate bears indications in graphite. Also added is the pure etching of the first plate as well as the original drawing of this engraving, attributable to Marillier. A very well preserved copy despite some scattered foxing. Provenance: Richard Lion (sale 1885 n° 147, according to a pencil note in the first volume). - Alfred Piat (cat. I, 1898, n° 716).
