*THEOPHILE ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923
)Breton village, Plestin. 1902. Soft varnish and drypoint. 172 x 115 [309 x 220]. Crauzat 62. Very nice proof on ivory laid paper, of the 2nd state (out of 3), before color, dedicated "to Eug. Delâtre" and signed in pencil. In the lower right corner of the sheet, annotation in pencil in Delâtre's hand: "March 1902 / 1st state". Some light foxing. Traces of glue (with a small fracture on the front in the upper right corner) and remnants of mounting tabs on the reverse. All margins untrimmed. Very rare. Crauzat lists only 3 proofs of this state. Final edition of 20 color proofs.
Despite the annotation "1er état" in the hand of Delâtre (printer), it is actually a 2nd state in Crauzat's order, as the drypoint is added to the soft varnish. The 1st state (our next number) is engraved with soft varnish only.
Provenance : Former collection of Pierre Cailler (1901-1971, Geneva).
