*Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940 ) The Avenue. (Pl. for Landscapes and Interiors). 1899. Lithograph. 410 x 305 [450 x 335]. Roger-Marx 33; Johnson 155-2. Printed in colors. Very nice and fresh proof on chine volant. All margins. Edition at 100 proofs. A. The art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard commissioned Vuillard, Denis, Bonnard and later Roussel to design twelve prints each. These loose-leaf albums, held together by a printed cover, were printed by Auguste Clot in an edition of one hundred. Vuillard probably began Paysages et Intérieurs as early as 1896, as emerges from the preserved designs. The suite, including the cover, consists of nine interiors and four land- or cityscapes. [...] Vuillard's suite was first exhibited, along with those of Denis and Bonnard, in February 1899 at Vollard's gallery [...] Unfortunately, they were not a commercial success, and Vollard soon began to sell the prints separately. Vuillard, who in Paysages et Intérieurs achieves a synthesis of his previous styles, lost interest in lithography after the appearance of his album. This series therefore represents the apex of his graphic oeuvre but also its conclusion." (Fleur Roos Rosa de Carvalho, Marije Vellekop, Printmaking in Paris; The Rage for prints at the fin de siècle, Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, 2012, p. 107).
