Robert, baron TASCHER DE LA PAGERIE (1740-1806) lieutenant of ship, commander of the ports and roads of Martinique, uncle of Joséphine de Beauharnais. L.A.S., Le Vauclin [Martinique] October 15, 1802, to the future Empress JOSÉPHINE, "my dearest niece"; 3 pages in-4.

A beautiful and long letter to Joséphine.
He tells her that his son Louis [known as Fanfan (1787-1861)] is to be presented to her by Abbé Noguès and M. Gallet de Saint-Aurin. "The first is one of the exiles from Cayenne whom the First Consul had called to France and whom providence led there by a miracle, according to the state of decay in which their ship was when they left Cayenne. Chance favored them, and they were welcomed in our country. Father Noguès spent nine months with your dear uncle, who introduced him to your loving mother. Thus he will be able to answer all the questions you will ask him about our health. He hopes that she will give him some compensation and that he will be able to mentor his son. He then praises Gallet de Saint-Aurin, whom she knows, who is a counselor on the Superior Council of Martinique. "He was a deputy in the colonial assembly and at the time of the conquest of the island, he was one of the members of the Government's Privy Council": he had to leave the island on the Berwick to report to the government. "Any other person than him would have been afraid of such an order, but strong of his confidence, he leaves with this temerity that the man who has nothing to reproach himself should not fear anything, especially when he has to go before Bonaparte" .... He hopes that she will do what is necessary to "do justice to this colonist, so loved, so cherished among us. He had a dwelling in the Spanish Trinidad [...]. He is of such great interest to the colony that the whole family must write to you in his favor. I am also writing to the First Consul. You know the honest character of your dear uncle, he has not changed"...
