SENEGAL. John SLEIGHT, slave trader, elected deputy for Senegal in 1851 (election contested). L.A.S., Saint-Louis August 26, 1851, to Durin Chaumel & Cie, Bordeaux; 1 page in-4, addressed with red wax seal.

Account of his election: after the votes in Gorée and Saint-Louis were counted, he was proclaimed "the people's representative for Senegal in the national legislative assembly. Some people protested against my election under the pretext that I am a supplier of millet for the government"... He knows that his opponents will seize all pretexts to break his election, but he does not believe in it. He asks to recommend him "to the moderate representatives of the Gironde [...] I am neither an orator nor a politician; my mission is to enlighten the Government on the needs of our colony"...
