REVOLUTION. MERCEREAU (born around 1758) stonecutter, president of the General Council of the Commune, he watched over the royal family in the Temple. L.A.S., Paris 2 Vendémiaire III (23 September 1794), to Stanislas Fréron, deputy to the National Convention, at the office of the newspaper L'Orateur du peuple; 2 pages in-fol., address.

Curious protest against the journalist and conventionalist Pierre-Jean Audouin, known as "le Sapeur" (because he was a battalion sapper in the Section des Carmes, at the beginning of the Revolution). He invites him to say a word to the "Sapeur des principes (Audouin)", who has allowed himself to say in his paper that "cetoit un réchappé de prison, qui sétoit au dent la section du Panthéon français a lad'hesion de la prétendue adresse de la Société Populaire de Dijon". This same escapee from prison thwarted the plot of the defrocked Bach, police commissioner, and contributed to the writing of the address of the Section of the French Pantheon presented to the Convention. "Says I pray you to the sapper that if I was in prison it is that I had more courage than him, I was arrested for having had the courage to rise against the véxation of the Revolutionary Committee and of the hermaphrodite sectional Society of the Pantheon, in this field of pain the crime persecuted the virtue [...He summarizes his career as a stonecutter and municipal officer, president of the General Council of Paris from December 1792 to February 1793: "I was not ashamed of my state, but with my stonecutter's apron, my clogs and all my working clothes, I said to the sapper, that the prison escapee never abandoned the people's cause"... And to conclude: "Courage, firmness, hatred to the shooters and the Therorists and the Republic will be saved"...
