Maurice ROSTAND. Autograph manuscript signed, Edward VIII, June 1937-June 1947; 61 pages in-4 or small in-4 written on the front in purple ink, with erasures and corrections, in a folder a.s. Praise written a few months after the abdication of the King of England (December 1936) and revised (final title, retouching, denouement), probably for a conference, ten years later. Maurice Rostand chooses to emphasize the freshness and freedom of spirit of the "unexpected prince" who could have been "a modern king": he himself was "conquered by this unyielding heart which, without perhaps being inspired by Shelley or Oscar Wilde, was of the very blood of his poets. "Emperor without an empire, king without a kingdom, Edward VIII, to whom history is wrong but poetry is right, is crowned more than any other by the diadem he has sacrificed"... Etc.
