Joseph-François MICHAUD (1767-1839). L.A.S., [Mansourah] "week of April 8" [1831], to Jean-François Mimaut consul general of France in Cairo; 2 1/2 pages in-fol., address. Interesting letter from the historian of the Crusades towards the end of his trip to the Orient undertaken in May 1830. He arrives at the end of his journey to Mansourah and Damietta: "I will sadly take again the road to Alexandria by crossing the delta; [...] we saw at one league from Cairo a kanche [kange] overturned, showing the keel instead of the mast; when I asked how this had happened, I was told that God had wanted it that way. God did not allow such a thing to happen to us, and I consider myself very happy. In Mansourah, Dr. Canova took him to the banks of the Achmoun canal: "We recognized the place where the crusaders were camped, the place where the Muslims were camped; I saw the raised ground where St. Louis appeared armed with his German sword, the small bridge that the Sire of Joinville defended; when we returned from our walk, I was shown the house of the eunuch Lokman where the king of France was locked up. I found something which is not less precious for me, it is an Arabic chronicle of Mansourah; [...] I am not missing anything to my joy than to be able to read this chronicle which is not known by our scholars". He then left for Damietta: "I visited the site of ancient Damietta, where the village of Lisbet del Borg [Ezbet el Borg], the village of the Sour, is today. [...] I had some pleasure in visiting these plains, the scene of so many battles that I have described [...] When I think of the crowd of renegades that produced the crusades, I think I see the descendant of a Frenchman in each of the Arabs that I meet in this country "... A L.A.S. to Mrs. Berryer is attached: "we are all workers of royalism, and thank God, we do not recognize any privilege"..., and a portrait.
