Louis-Ange PITOU (1767-1846) chansonnier. L.A.S., Paris May 20, 1820, to Édouard Mounier, Director General of the Police and the Bookshop, ; 2 pages in-fol. (frayed edges).

Rare and curious letter about the deathbed of the duke of Berry. Pitou published that same year Le trône du martyr du 13 février 1820, oublié, demandé ensuite aux possesseurs, au bout d'un mois, par Monsieur, comte d'Artois (Duriez, 1820), and Véritable dernier coucher de Monseigneur le duc de Berry, le 13 février 1820; suivi d'événements importans, authentiques et inédits, communiqués par l'un des médecins appelés à donner ses soins à son Altesse Royale; et par Duriez, tapissier, qui a fourni le coucher du prince [Pitou also wrote Le trône du martyr du 13 février 1820, forgotten, requested afterwards from the possessors, after one month, by Monsieur, comte d'Artois (Duriez, 1820), followed by important events, authentic and unpublished, communicated by one of the doctors called to give his care to His Royal Highness; and by Duriez, tapestry-maker who provided the prince's bed (Duriez, 1820).]
He sends him "unpublished facts and authentic pieces" on the death of the duke of Berry: "I have made a lot of expenses to note the monument stated in these two writings. H.R.H. Madam the Duchess of Berry, enlightened by these two works, made give to Mr. Duriez on May 12 a gold tabatiere [...] by making us say to continue our claims". Pitou paid all the expenses "on condition that the bolster of the last bed of the Prince would be given to me, which was done by Mr. Duriez [...] On March 20 the bed of Mr. the Duke of Berry was asked to the owner by the secretary of the Chamber of Mr. Count of Artois on an order of this Prince: I was absent. Mr. Duriez made for me the reserves of the bolster one passed in addition all was removed and one did not address us a receipt. Until this day we claimed in vain I for the bolster, Mr. Duriez for the rest of the bed. Our hearts gave up this monument to the house of Bourbon, but neither the King nor the Princes nor the ministers of H.M. will authorize the measure which one took with regard to us to keep silence and to make us offer orally by an intermediary a price well below the disbursements "...
