ZOLA (Émile). Renée. Play in five acts. With a preface by the author. Paris : G. Charpentier et Cie, 1887. - In-12, half red cloth, smooth spine decorated with a gilt fleuron, untrimmed, cover preserved (Ch. Knecht). First edition of this play performed for the first time on the stage of the Théâtre du Vaudeville on April 16, 1887. It begins with an important preface by the author. This copy is enriched with a beautiful L.A.S. from Zola to the actor and director Porel, from the Odéon, dated March 23, 1884, one and a half page in-12. Zola would like to "fix the fate of Renée" before his departure and asks Porel to send him back his manuscript. In his preface, Zola tells the adventures of his play with a long passage on Porel. One learns in particular that he met him at the beginning of March 1884, that he recovered at that time the manuscript of the play, which he kept for two years in spite of the repeated requests of the author. Copy enriched with a photographic portrait of Zola pasted on the second cover and a second photograph of the author's funeral. Slight wear to the covers. Some foxing.
