*LAFON (Mary) - DORÉ (Gustave). Fierabras. National legend. Paris : Librairie nouvelle, 1857. - Large in-8, eggplant chagrin, gilt and cold-stamped fillets on the boards, ornate spine, gilt border inside, gilt edges (period binding). Beautiful edition illustrated in first edition with 12 out-of-text compositions by Gustave Doré, wood-engraved by Meason. "The illustrations of Fierabras are conceived in the same spirit as those of the Aventures du Chevalier Jaufre: swarms of battles, assaults of high towers, rides through medieval landscapes, where formidable and improbable fortresses loom on the horizon. Gustave Doré is here in one of the evocative environments that he has always preferred" (Leblanc, p. 204). Beautiful copy in full contemporary chagrin, a very rare condition for this title. Some minor wear and tear, corners slightly dulled. Provenance : Pierre Van Der Rest, with ex-libris. - Bourlon de Rouvre, with bookplate.
