Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885)
The Good Samaritan. 1861. Pen-and-ink lithograph. 440 x 560 [494 x 633]. Van Gelder 100; Becker 2nd state (of 3); Préaud 29, 1st state A. Beautiful proof on yellowish chine appliqué, from the 2nd printing (1867), with Lemercier's address, before the white spot at the bottom in the foliage (called "bird"), before the white thistle under the lance, but with the black spot on the leg of the 2nd monkey at the lower right, carefully washed, the chine reassembled with care. Three adhesive remnants and mounting tabs at head on verso. Small persistent grayish stains in the good (reduced) margins.

"Very quickly, perhaps as early as the second printing dated September 10, 1867 (75 copies on a single chine, 25 on two chines), various accidents occur. The first, noticed by David Becker, is a black spot that develops on the left leg of the small monkey that, in the lower right corner of the print, clings to the back of a larger monkey. Before the white bird, before the white thistle." (M. Préaud, Rodolphe Bresdin 1822-1885, Robinson graveur, exhibition catalog, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2000, p. 75).
