MORÉAS (Jean).
Les Syrtes.
Paris, 1884. - In-12, paperback.
Very rare first edition, printed at author's expense at only 124 copies not put in the market (n° 62), of the first poetic collection of Jean Moréas, inspired by Paul Verlaine.

This copy was offered to the occultist writer Joséphin Péladan (1858-1918) by the poet, theorist and historian of esotericism Stanislas de Guaïta (1861-1897), friend of Jean Moréas. It has this simple mailing on the false title: "To Joséphin Péladan // Stanislas de Guaita". The latter has also put his autograph signature on the cover.

This is not the only known copy with a letter from Stanislas de Guaïta, the Bodmer foundation has one with a dedication from the latter to Oscar Méténier.

A skilfully restored copy, the spine and the endpapers have been redone and the cover plates rebacked.
