Phulkaris are traditional Punjabi shawls embroidered by women for important ceremonies such as weddings. They are decorated with geometrical patterns covering or suggesting imaginary gardens (bagh). Here, the pattern is rare, known as the Gate of Paradise (Darshan Dwar). The description of a similar shawl in the Philadelphia Museum of Art suggests that these luxurious embroideries are offerings to Sikh (Gurdwara), Muslim Sufi, or Hindu shrines (no. 2017-9-11).
