Ceramic bowl with marbled decoration, Iran or Turkey, 18th-19th centuryLarge ceramic bowl on a circular foot with a gadrooned body and a flared lip with marbled green, brick and brown polychrome engobe decoration on a cream background under a transparent glaze. Diameter : 19.2 cm ; height : 8.2 cm Chips, hole of suspension on the base . A gouache and a description of the former collector, Mr. Francis Barillet, are attached. Provenance : Former Francis Barillet collection. The attribution of this bowl is questionable. The Ashmolean Museum holds a bowl with marbled decoration (no. 1956-27) attributed by Géza Fehérvari to Dagestan, 18th century (cf. Géza Fehérvari, Islamic Pottery, 1973, pp 141, 143, reprod. pl. 189) in comparison with a piece held in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Another piece with marbled decoration in Jean Soustiel, La céramique islamique, Fribourg, 1985, p 149, fig. 179 is attributed by its author to the Ottoman Empire, possibly Greece or the Dardanelles. Finally, a third hypothesis could be that of an Iranian production turned towards China if one believes the kinship of this piece with the marbled decoration of certain Chinese ceramics such as the Cizhou production. A marbled ceramic bowl, probably Iran or Turkey, 18th-19th century
