[TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (Henri de) - JOZE (Joze). Babylon of Germany. Types de Berlin. Paris: P. Antony et Cie, 1894. - In-18, paperback. Very rare first edition of which there were no large paper editions. It includes a very beautiful cover illustrated by Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC and 18 compositions in black in the text, by Ferdinand BAC and Lubin de Beauvais. Victor Joze proposes in this work a painting in particular of the German public girls; he gives this not very flattering image in his preface: "The public girl who frequents our establishments of pleasure, to find there her daily bread, always keeps a certain restraint. She is happy to pass herself off as a 'dancer' (...) The German girl does not care much about the external side of her profession. She is not going to have fun trying to pose for an artist. She is a prostitute and not something else. The prettier and more successful she is, the more she gets paid, that's all. (...) Next to these heroines of Babylon in Germany, with their heavy gait, their slouching nipples, the coarsest girl in Paris appears as a queen of joy! " A very well preserved copy, including on the cover the mention of "1st Edition" . Attached : - MARSOLLEAU (Louis) - BYL (Arthur). HORS LES LOIS. Comedy in one act, in verse. Paris: P.-V. Stock, 1898. - In-18, paperback. First edition of this comedy first performed on November 5, 1897 at the Théâtre Antoine. The cover is illustrated with a lithograph by TOULOUSE-LAUTREC. A very well preserved copy.
