FEYDEAU (Ernest). Fanny. Study. Paris : Amyot, [1858]. - In-12, dark blue half-maroquin, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover and spine kept (V. Champs). Genuine first edition published in May 1858, of this famous realistic novel by Ernest Feydeau on adultery, considered by the critics of the time as a new "Madame Bovary". It does not have the preface by Jules Janin which only appeared in the second edition published in July of the same year. SAINTE-BEUVE'S EDITION, with this very nice sending of the author on the false title: " offered to the author of Volupté, to // Monsieur Sainte-Beuve, to the most // delicate of the masters of the written word, // by his unworthy emulator // E. Feydeau " Sainte-Beuve was one of those who defended Feydeau's work in one of his talks, considering it as a "masterpiece of truth and poetry" . Good copy bound by Victor Champs. There are a few reading notes and a few passages underlined in pencil which do not seem to be in Sainte-Beuve's hand. Soiling to the cover. A second copy of the same edition, in contemporary brown half-chagrin, very well preserved despite some curling.
